We are Kerry Eielson and John Fanning, two writers who moved from NYC to buy and create La Muse in our twenties with credit cards and loans, paying them off by ghost writing books and working on other projects.
We started the retreat by leaving great jobs in publishing.
Why? We wanted to create a different life for ourselves, our children, and our own creative projects.
Kerry worked in publishing in New York and Paris, at Self, ELLE, Talk and The New York Times.
She has ghostwritten several books on alternative healing, and authored a book about weddings.
Kerry’s creative writing projects have included a novel and two screenplays, one of which is about her great grand-uncle, the aviation pioneer Carl Ben Eielson.
She has also attended many writers’ conferences ranging from The Breadloaf Writers Conference to the Sherman Oaks Screenwriting Conference.
Kerry also loves crocheting and yoga.
She crochets custom-made items for Musers and has yoga teacher training.
She will be offering all levels of morning yoga soon.
Kerry was born in Maryland the armybrat daughter (with her older brother) of an Army Colonel surgeon and a multi-talented mom who ran a small crafts business and, later, a catering service.
Kerry grew up in Germany, Colorado and Massachusetts before attending school in Wisconsin and then Paris, where she lived for three years before moving to New York and, finally, Labastide Esparbairenque.
The last job John had before founding La Muse was working as a researcher reporter for Vanity Fair magazine in New York.
John was born in rural Ireland and is the eldest of seven children.
His father worked in farming as an agricultural advisor for the Irish government.
He has lived in Dublin, London, New York and France.
We met and married in 1999 and have twin boys, born in April 2004, as well as a beautiful six year old girl.
We founded our retreat in 2001.
